The pawpaw is native to the Eastern, Southern, and Midwestern United States and adjacent southernmost Ontario, Canada, from New York west to eastern Nebraska, and south to northern Florida and eastern Texas. The pawpaw is a patch-forming (clonal) understory tree found in well-drained, deep, fertile bottom-land and hilly upland habitat, with large, simple leaves and large fruits, the largest edible fruit indigenous to the United States. Physical Characteristics : A decidious Shrub growing to 4.5 m (14ft) by 4 m (13ft) at a slow rate. It is hardy to zone 5. It is in flower from May to June, and the seeds ripen in October. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs)The plant is self-fertile. The plant prefers medium (loamy) soils and requires well-drained soil.The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils..It cannot grow in the shade.It requires moist soil.
